About Mike & CMG Motorsports

Mike Gwaltney has been involved with racing for nearly 20 years.  Starting on the dirt at Virginia Motor Speedway, Mike learned from the ground up what it takes to build and compete in one of the toughest racing venues anywhere.

Collecting victories, track records, and track championships along the way, Mike learned how to build and maintain all types of racecars.  Often forced to do his own fabrication due to a modest racing budget, Mike was able to maintain a competitive presence in the racing community, earning the respect of his rivals through hard work and determination.

In 1999, Mike purchased a Legends racecar.  Armed with more than a decade of racing knowledge and experience, Gwaltney was a force to be reckoned with from the beginning.  In 2000, he had one of the most successful seasons in Southside Speedway history, collecting 9 wins in 12 races.  

Mike began studying areas of concern on his Legends car, trying to improve on what was currently available through the dealers.  Spindles and rear end housings were the first areas Mike saw as areas in need of improvement.  Questionable quality control from the standard 600 Racing suppliers led Mike to build his own jigs and to start building top-quality housings and spindles for his own use.  Mike was uniquely qualified for the task because of his work in race car fabrication for shops like Creech Motorsports, the preeminent builder of dirt and asphalt modifieds in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Mike has been fabricating equipment like lower A-frames, nerf bars, and even complete roll cages for quite some time, including work on Creech's Busch efforts in 2002.

It was not long before Mike's competitors began to take notice and ask him to build items for their race cars.  Before he knew it, Mike had built a respectable clientele and was known for his unique, top quality products.  Today, Mike offers not only top quality standard parts, like his housings and spindles, but innovative new accessories for Legends racers.  Combination air scoop /  oil cooler mounts and wheel stands are a testament to Mike's dedication and innovation within the sport of Legends racing.
